Finding the Haunted Arcade Look

Building a fantasy world that feels rendered by an old arcade cabinet teaching itself new tricks.

The visual direction for The Unfinished Kingdom lives between two ideas: a late-1980s arcade cabinet and a fantasy world that should not exist inside it.

We do not want a clean modern mobile interface wearing a scanline filter. We also do not want nostalgia to make the game difficult to read.

The cabinet uses black and deep navy surfaces with hard violet borders, mint system signals, amber rewards, and controlled magenta corruption. Text and panels are crisp. Colors separate instead of dissolving into one another. Glow is reserved for moments that deserve it.

Inside the battlefield, layered pixel-art scenery moves slowly behind the Warden. The world should feel larger on desktop, while the same essential composition remains readable in portrait mobile space. Parallax is modular so lower-performance settings can remove layers without removing the location's identity.

The Warden also needed restraint. Early concepts made the starting character look too heroic. Shining weapons, elaborate armor, and a cape implied accomplishments the player had not earned. The approved starting direction is deliberately vulnerable: patched cloth, worn boots, a damaged weapon, a cracked buckler, and only a faint hint of stranger systems.

That weakness matters because equipment changes the character visually. If the Warden begins fully decorated, the Armory has nowhere to take them. A strong long-term silhouette begins with room to grow.

Pixel art creates production rules. Transparent character assets remain PNG files. Large backgrounds use WebP where it preserves sharp edges and meaningfully reduces size. Scaling uses nearest-neighbor rendering. Adjacent equipment layers require dark outlines and deliberate separation.

The haunted arcade style is not a filter added at the end. It shapes the interface, animation, performance plan, equipment system, sound direction, and even how the game explains technical limitations.

Cabinet 14 is a machine. The kingdom is what happens when it dreams.
